MAMARONECK AREA SCHOOL CHILDREN CREATE SPECIAL GIFTS FOR YOUNG HURRICANE VICTIMS

(Larchmont, NY) Love In a Box 2006, an innovative program operated by two area mothers, will link Westchester school children with the displaced school children of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Students in Mamaroneck and Rye Neck District schools are hand-decorating shoeboxes, filling them with small new items, such as notepads, books, cards, pens, and games for shipment to Baton Rouge.

The program targets elementary school children and the boxes will be delivered to children in the same age ranges as their creators.

Children from New Orleans who are temporarily studying in the East Baton Rouge, La. school district will receive these special gifts during Random Acts of Kindness Week, February 13-17th, 2006. The boxes will be shipped to Baton Rouge through the generosity of Collins Brothers Moving Corporation of Larchmont, NY and the program has additional private funding.

Murray Avenue (Larchmont) Elementary School Principal Jennifer Scazafave remarked, “This program is a terrific vehicle for our students giving back and helping others. They are learning about events outside our community and how they can touch the lives of others.” Other schools participating in the program include: Central Elementary (Larchmont), Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary (Mamaroneck), Daniel Warren Elementary School and F.E. Bellows Elementary School in Rye Neck.

“We’re delighted to use Love In a Box as part of our character education curriculum at Daniel Warren. Our faculty embrace it as an ideal vehicle for integrating imagination and compassion at the elementary level and our children are having a terrific time helping others,” observed Joan Babcock, Principal at Daniel Warren Elementary School in Rye Neck.

Catherine O’Leary and Linda Ryan, working mothers of elementary-aged children in the school districts, developed the concept after doing web searches on child-to-child or family-to-family relief programs. “Just after Hurricane Katrina, I was watching the newscasts thinking ‘How can I help?,’” says O’Leary. “During our brainstorming, Linda and I were concerned that, as mothers of very young children, we couldn’t physically go to help the people of New Orleans, but we still wanted to let them know we care. Making Love In a Box happen is a great way to allow our children to participate in caring for others who have been affected by this disaster,” Ms. O’Leary commented.

“When you see a child actually make the box himself and listen as he muses about who will receive it and how it might make him or her feel, you know that this project is a success. Now we just cannot wait to see the children of New Orleans open one of these and know that some other child sent them this just because they care!” explained Ms. Ryan.

The children will be receiving these packages because Mr. Frank Webers, chairman of Collins Brothers Moving Corporation, felt that his company wanted to play a major role in this Random Act of Kindness. “None of us can completely understand what these children have lost. This simple program is one way for them to know that friendship is not dependent on place and that, as they begin their lives anew, others still care. At Collins Brothers, we’re honored to use our resources to make this project a reality,” remarked Mr. Webers.
